Charcoal

Charcoal is light black residue of carbon and ash produced typically by burning plants or animal bones. Some charcoal sticks (vine and willow) are created by burning plants in a kiln. Compressed charcoal sticks are ground charcoal mixed with a gum or wax binder. Charcoal sticks come in various widths, and densities. Compressed charcoal is typically available in 2B, 4B and 6B (with 6B being a darker/softer charcoal). Vine and Willow charcoal are a lighter, softer, less permanent charcoal that easily wipes off or erases from the surface. Compressed charcoal is darker in tone, with more staining power and is a more permanent drawing medium. Fixative sprays are often used to aid in the permanency of charcoal drawings and help alleviate the flaking or smudging associated with charcoal. Carbon Pencils are a mix of graphite and charcoal which produces a dark richer tone.

Conte Carre Crayons

Conte a Paris Product | Since 1795

Conte Carre is different than charcoal, pastel, or graphite. It is a mixture of natural pigment, clay and cellulose ether. Conte a Paris is a company developped in France in 1795 by Nicholas Jacques Conte (inventor of the modern artist pencil). The Conte a Paris company produces a variety of drawing tools (pastels, graphite, charcoal). The Conte Carre Sketching Crayons are  in a category of their own. Available in Black, White, Sanguine, Bistre, Portrait Pink and Grey. You will usually find them on drawing class supply lists. They are a soft drawing medium; they feel a little greasier, smudge less and are harder to erase than charcoal or soft pastels.

Graphite is a pure form of carbon. Graphite pencils today are a mix of clay, water and graphite. There are typically 20 grades of graphite from 9H to 9B, with HB (standard household pencil) at the middle. H stands for Hard and B stands for Black. F stands for Fine point and is typically used for writing rather than drawing.  4H, 2H pencils are popular amongst artists for tracing out light line and layout work while the softer B, 2B, 4B, 6B are more commonly used for shading, blending and sketching techniques.
