Oils are meant to increase the flow/brushability of oil paint. They may also be used as an intital brush cleaner instead of solvent. Many artists are moving away from using solvents or driers in their work. Traditionally oil painters used a combination of oil and solvent as a painting medium.
Walnut oil is slightly slower drying than linseed oil, but does not yellow over time.
Linseed oil is the most popular oil to use with oil painting and many brands use linseed oil as a base in the paint.
Safflower oil is paler than linseed oil and often used in white oil paint manufacturing.
